So I really did it up with these chocolate cake shots. My birthday was last week and before heading to dinner I made these shots. At first sip, it's like taking a bite of chocolate cake. Here's the breakdown of the shot - Frangelico liqueur, whipped cream vodka (you also use vanilla vodka), and of course a splash of heavy cream - because it smooths everything out.

Literally just pour all of this into a co*cktail shaker, give it a shake, and it's the most delicious co*cktail shot you'll ever make.

I did take this a step further with the sugar rim. This is the decadent part. I coated the rim in a little cream cheese icing and then dipped it into some cocoa powder. After adding the chocolate cake shots to the shot glasses, I topped with whipped cream and dusted some cocoa powder on top.

To say that these taste like fluffy chocolate cake is an understatement. It's literally chocolate cake in liquid form!

Save this delicious shot for a special occasion or just enjoy them with friends on a Friday night. They're also perfect for happy hour, a birthday party, girls night, Oh and especially valentines day!

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Chocolate Cake Shot Recipe (2)

In taste, these shot are very much like my duck fart shots. However, the ingredients are completely different.

  • Whipped Cream Vodka: I used Veil's Whipped Cream Vodka. The flavors match so well with the rich and creamy flavor of chocolate cake. However, if you can't find this flavor/brand, I recommend using Smirnoff's Salted Caramel Vodka, Vanilla Vodka, or Cake Vodka. If you can't find any of these, use regular vodka. For a citrus spin on this shooter, you try using a citrus vodka / citron vodka.
  • Hazelnut Liqueur: I used Frangelico which is an Italian hazelnut liqueur that comes from Tonda Gentile Hazelnuts. These hazelnuts have flavors of vanilla, coffee and dark chocolate which gives this delicious shooter it's true chocolate cake flavor. It kind of tastes like an espresso martini.
  • Heavy Cream: I use cream in a lot of my drink recipes and co*cktail recipes because it helps to cut the strong flavor of the alcohol and smooths out the shot to make it a bit more palatable. This ingredients is optional of course, feel free to get creative and explore different ways to make it your own.
  • Garnishes: I made a cocoa powder rim using cream cheese icing and cocoa powder. I also topped off the shot with whipped cream. If you prefer something a little less decadent, garnish with lemon slices instead.

What You'll Need

Like more of my shot recipes, I highly recommend using a jigger and a co*cktail shaker. These are not mandatory, but strongly suggested. Because these shots have cream, you need to ensure they're mixed well so that the cream and liquid come together.

If you don't have a co*cktail shaker, you can use a mason jar with a lid or any cup with a lid. Don't have a jigger either? No problem! You can use a shot glass to measure the ingredients. One average size shot glass is 1.5 ounces so it's an easy replacement/substitute for a jigger.

Tips

  • Add the ice to the shots last so that the ice doesn't melt and dilute the shot.
  • If dipping the rim of the glass into cocoa powder, be sure to use a shallow plate or bowl.
  • Turn these into a german chocolate cake shot and use coconut rum instead of vodka.
  • I recommend placing the shot glasses into the refrigerator or freezer for about 20 minutes prior to making the shots. This makes the shots nice and cold.
  • If the cocoa powder rim is too chocolatey, you can make a sugar rim using white sugar instead.

How to make Chocolate Cake Shots

Chocolate Cake Shot Recipe (3)
  • (optional first step) Make the cocoa powder rim: dip the rim of the shot glasses into cream cheese icing and then dip into cocoa powder. Tap off any excess cocoa powder and set aside.
  • Add vodka, hazelnut liqueur, and cream to a co*cktail shaker. Add ice and shake for 10-15 seconds.
  • Pour into shot glasses and garnish with a little whipped cream and a dash of cocoa powder (optional).

Make it into a co*cktail!

In taste, they're very similar to my duck fart shots, however, the ingredients are quite a bite different. Turn these chocolate shooters into a co*cktail by 1 ounce of vodka, 1 ounce of hazelnut liqueur, and 1 ounce of heavy cream. Mix it all together in a co*cktail shaker and pour into a co*cktail glass. Save this one for your next party, everyone will LOVE them!

Make a Mocktail!

My husband doesn't drink so I'm always cognizant of make alcohol-free drinks for him. Swap out hazelnut liqueur for hazelnut syrup, swap out vodka for your favorite non-alcoholic vodka, like Strykk, and add heavy cream as per usual.
